Moments that defined their public life

Photographs span decades: Charles' christening in 1948, play at Balmoral in 1952, polo matches in 1956 and 2003 (when he kissed her hand), his 1969 investiture as Prince of Wales, candid scenes at Windsor and Braemar through the 2000s, the Chelsea Flower Show presentation in 2009, and shared duties like the State Opening of Parliament in 2019. They were also side by side for Trooping the Colour and the Platinum Jubilee pageant in 2022.

Legacy and succession

Queen Elizabeth died on Sept. 8, 2022, at 96. Charles succeeded her immediately and was crowned eight months later. In his first address as monarch two weeks after her death he spoke movingly of her guidance and example to the family.
