Kelli Barrett’s Bertie is underwritten and sidelined vocally, leaving a gap at the story’s emotional center. The score by Mike Stoller with lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart rarely lingers, and key numbers, including the climactic “Wind Beneath My Wings,” land with polish but not the deep vulnerability the tale demands.
Directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart, the show opened officially at the Majestic Theatre on April 22 after beginning performances March 27 and is scheduled through Sept. 6 before a national tour. The book is by Iris Rainer Dart and Thom Thomas, developed with David Austin. Despite solid elements, Beaches struggles to translate its tearjerker legacy into a fully satisfying musical.
