How the Sox marked the occasion

The White Sox revealed plans in April to honor the pope with a special hat. Fans who purchased a package for the Aug. 11 game received matching papal miters and sat in a designated cheering area for the matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, a game the home team did not win.

A longtime Sox connection

Leo, identified as the first American pope, has displayed his Sox loyalty before, even wearing a team cap during an appearance at the Vatican. The clubhouse reacted positively when they learned of his support. He was also given the final-out ball from Game 1 of the 2005 World Series by former catcher A.J. Pierzynski; he had attended that series as Robert Prevost, and the White Sox went on to win the championship against the Houston Astros.
